Cultivating Personal Agency in a Divided World

As the election comes to a head again today, like it does every 4 years, it’s easy to feel that the fate of our future rests solely on who holds political power. Yet when we hinge our sense of safety and progress on any leader alone, we surrender our personal agency. It's true—politics have fueled division, not only within America but across the world. Leadership, whether in government, a company, a church, a family, or a community, undeniably influences us. But it doesn’t get the last word on our lives or our future.

Every day, I witness people reclaiming their power, changing long-standing patterns, upsetting cycles of systemic abuse, and creating real transformation. They’re impacting their families, communities, and beyond by looking inward, accepting responsibility, and fostering hope. It’s a powerful reminder that hate and fear and blame are tactics that control, divide, and manipulate. Sadly, many of us have fallen into these traps- we even willingly subject ourselves to it through the media programming. But we have a choice: Will we keep feeding our minds with fear and shame, or will we choose hope and self-awareness?

I’m not denying the weight of today’s issues or the need for responsible leadership. Nor am I suggesting we ignore real-world challenges and oppression. But real change begins within us, not with someone else. The narrative that one leader alone can fix or control all our problems has led us here. But just as one person can create significant positive change, you can make an impact.

Who you vote for isn’t my focus. What matters is how you choose to show up in the world, the personal challenges you’re facing, and how you’re transforming from within. That’s where my support lies. And paradoxically, this is how we change the world.  (Think what the world would look like if all our politicians did this work!)

Keep on keeping on.  You're making a difference.
